MKS&H Loves the 80’s and Halloween…
MKS&H was selected for an onsite visit this year by Frederick County Office of Economic Development for Business Appreciation week. To their surprise, the staff was dressed it 80’s garb for our annual Halloween party. They were thrilled to see even accountants have fun and were happy to snap this photo of our group!
George Oliver Sparks Jr. -July 31, 1920 – October 12, 2017
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to one of the founding partners of McLean, Koehler, Sparks and Hammond. George Oliver Sparks Jr. passed away on October 12, 2017, at the age of 97. He made Windsor his home for most of his life.
After World War II, George earned his JD from the University of Maryland and then joined with Bill McLean and Frederick Koehler who were already practicing accounting together in Baltimore. Together, they expanded the Firm to Westminster and then later to Frederick when Bill Hammond joined the firm. One of George’s first clients was Foster Brothers Manufacturing Company. While completing his formal education, Bill Hammond worked for Foster Brothers as an accountant. Through their working relationship, George and Bill became friends and that is how Bill Hammond came to join the Firm. Coincidentally, during the war, both George and Bill were B-25 pilots in the Army Air Corps. Long after they became friends, George and Bill discovered that they had been part of the same medium bomb group. Although they didn’t know each other at the time, George and Bill were stationed at the same airstrip in Feni, India (now Bangledesh) from 1944 to 1945. George was released from the Army at the age of 75 with the rank of Captain.
For 28 years, during his free time, George taught accounting at Johns Hopkins and served as a member/chairman of the Maryland State Board of Certified Professional Accountants. After his retirement from the firm in 1991, George and his wife Beth spent an extensive amount of time traveling.
George came back for the MKS&H firm meeting in 2013 for the seventieth anniversary; he spent some time with the staff and spoke about what it was like starting an accounting firm in Baltimore in the 1940’s. He was, at that time, the only surviving founding partner of the four. He was known as a business developer, being outgoing and well connected in the business community.
George was an admirable man who will be missed. All of us at MKS&H wish to express our deep condolences to George’s family, friends, and all who knew and were affected by him and his work.
Maryland Manufacturing Day 2017
Today, a group of MKS&H’s Manufacturing Team will be exhibiting at Martins West supporting the Regional Manufacturing Institute of Maryland (RMI) and Maryland Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MD MEP) in honor of National Manufacturing month. It should be an exciting day…Governor Larry Hogan will be out to show his support as well! The purpose of Maryland Manufacturing Day is to celebrate modern manufacturing and to inspire the next generation of manufacturers.

It’s Recruiting Season at MKS&H!
This week our staff will be visiting two prominent Maryland schools looking for fresh new talent for the coming year.
Thursday, September 21st, we will be attending the annual Accounting Evening at Mount St. Mary’s University. The following day, Friday, September 22nd, we will be attending Towson University’s annual Accounting Open House. We have a long standing relationship with both schools and are very excited to be back onsite meeting with the staff and interviewing the students for both internships and entry level accounting positions.
Both of these events provide students a great opportunity to network and meet professionals from accounting and business advisory firms in the area.
MKS&H Semi-Annual Meeting
Last week we held our semi-annual company meeting; this was our less formal summer meeting where all MKSHer’s leave the remoteness of their home/satellite office to get together in person. The meeting was held at our headquarters in Frederick Maryland. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss current issues, business trends and key strategies to help move the firm forward in the coming year. We spent some time talking about the changes over the past year, our vision for the future and our mission; “To help our clients achieve their goals through superior service and long term relationships.” We wrapped up the meeting with a small cocktail hour to celebrate our continued success.
We have a tremendous team here at MKS&H, it’s wonderful to work with a group of individuals who have a strong desire to work together, to do the best they can to serve our clients and to continue to build new and maintain current relationships.
Exciting things are happening here at MKS&H!
Earlier this summer we moved into our new Hunt Valley offices located at 201 International Circle, Suite 230.
We are very excited about in our new space is – It is beautiful and there is less of it! Bricks and mortar have their place in our society, but when it comes to providing professional services, meeting our clients (and our employees) on their terms and schedules is key. With our new space arrangements, we have seized the opportunity and enabled our valued employees to have more flexibility in their personal work environments. We all know that Millennial employees demand flexibility, and why not? The world continues to change and we are more connected than ever. For MKS&H, helping our millennial employees learn and grow with efficacy is critical to our strategy.
I would like to send a special thanks to our employees who put a lot of effort into closing our old office and getting us set-up in our new space. This was teamwork at it’s best!
We would also like to thank you, our readers, for all your loyal support throughout the years. We look forward to continuing in our tradition of providing meaningful content that you will find valuable and beyond the numbers.

SelectUSA Investment Summit
On June 18 – 20, 2017, Kathy Davis attended the SelectUSA Investment Summit at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington DC. This high-profile event is dedicated to promoting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the United States. The event brings together companies from all over the world, economic development organizations and other parties working to facilitate business investment in the United States.
Death Care team leaders attend the NFDA Convention
In late October two MKS&H Death Care team leaders attended the NFDA International Convention & Expo in the city of brotherly love. The conference is a great venue to meet other professionals that service the death care industry.
The opening intro by Requiem, one of the convention sponsors, was heartfelt, inspiring and a great start to an excellent event. One of our partner’s even got to meet Ben Franklin and Betsy Ross during the Service of Remembrance.
MKS&Hers volunteer and learn at the MD Food Bank
A group of MKS&H staff gave up a few hours on Saturday, November 5th, to volunteer at the Maryland Food Bank. During the three hour shift, they helped sort potatoes and home & beauty products.
Everyone enjoyed learning more about the processes at the Maryland Food Bank and were mind-boggled by the 50 million lbs. of food that passes through the distribution center on an annual basis.
“I love their purpose,” reminisced Kathy Davis, “…until hunger ends.”
Last year, the Maryland Food Bank distributed 44.2 million meals thanks in part to help from volunteers and donations.
MKS&H welcomes three new sworn in CPAs!
MKS&H is pleased to announce the swearing in of three new CPAs, Anca Stradley, Shawn Burman, and Brian Finley.
Along with their colleagues, they attended the MACPA swearing in ceremony last night to honor our profession and welcome the future. They were recognized for the years of work they have invested in achieving their goal of reaching this milestone. We are extremely proud of our three new CPAs.
2016 Women to Watch event
On September 30th, our very own Jennifer Milas, Senior Tax Manager and M&D Team leader, attended MACPA’s 2016 Women to Watch Awards breakfast. The Women to Watch Awards program highlights the accomplishments of women in the CPA profession.
Jennifer was an honored recipient of the Emerging Leader Award in 2015 and was asked to return as a panelist this year. She discussed adversities she’s overcome and was asked for advice on building a successful career.
When asked about the event, Jennifer said “It was a great morning, full of empowerment and celebrating women. There were uplifting discussions among both men and women in the profession.” Her biggest takeaway was that men and women don’t necessarily need to be treated equally, but everyone should be treated fairly.
Gears on the Gridiron: Play under review
Despite some dreary weather, our M&D Team had a great time celebrating Manufacturing Day 2016 at RMI’s Gears on the Gridiron event.
The team had a great time mingling and connecting with great Maryland manufacturers like Tulkoff Foods. The Make It in Maryland exhibit is always a hit and the M&D Team really enjoyed the robotic demonstrations, run by kids from Hereford Zone Robotics. Of course, the highlight was having our picture taking with Testudo, the Terrapin’s mascot. We can’t wait for next year!
We’re taking a Time Machine to the 21st Annual Business Expo
Our Construction and M&D Teams will be prepping their 1920’s slang to travel back in time for the Fredrick County Chamber of Commerce Roaring 20’s themed Annual Business Expo; the largest business trade show in Frederick County. We will join other top businesses who really “know their onions.” It will be a day packed with inspiration, educational panels, networking, and interactive exhibits. “Get a wiggle on” and stop by our exhibitor space, learn more about our firm, and try your hand at some three-card monte.
Gears on the Gridiron
On October 1st, in celebration of National Manufacturing Day, a group of MKS&H’s Manufacturing Team will be exhibiting at Gears on the Gridiron Pre-Game Tailgate. After the tailgate, keep an eye out for us as we cheer on the Maryland Terrapins as they play the Purdue Boilermakers. The event is hosted by Maryland Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MD MEP) and Regional Manufacturing Institute of Maryland (RMI) to show appreciation to the manufacturing companies, their employees and their families who work tirelessly making great products right here in Maryland!
Our Manufacturing Team headed to the RMI Energy Forum
Two of our leading Manufacturing Team members, Jennifer Milas and Shawn Burman. will be attending the RMI Energy Forum in Timonium next week.
The energy forum features leading Maryland manufacturing companies who have graduated from the MD Energy Administration and MD MEP energy efficiency program. They’ll also hear unique perspectives that have helped these companies to create a culture of energy awareness.
Shawn and Jenn are looking forward to compelling, interactive presentations and connecting with top Maryland manufacturers.

MKS&H is pleased to announce the promotion of Wayne Baldwin, CPA to Partner
Wayne joined the firm as a principal in 2013. Overseeing the daily operations and client service aspects of the audit and accounting department in the Hunt Valley office, Wayne quickly became a trusted mentor to staff and reliable advisor to the clients he serves.
‘‘Wayne brings considerable experience and management expertise to the role. I am confident that his drive and ambition for the firm will deliver our business strategy and continue our mission of delivering a high level of quality care and service to our clients,” said Kathy Davis, Managing Partner of MKS&H.

MKS&H Giving Back for the Holidays
We are excited to partner with two wonderful organizations this holiday season to give back.
Our Frederick office is providing gifts to families at Heartly House. Heartly House serves Frederick County residents who have been impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. Heartly House has been providing comprehensive services for over 30 years. We helped 3 families this year including 8 kids.
Our Hunt Valley office has chosen to provide gifts to Family and Children’s Services of Maryland’s Adopt a Senior Program. This program benefits families and individuals that have been displaced from their homes as a result of domestic violence or unemployment, low-income and homebound seniors, military families, and others in the community who are facing hardships. We have adopted 3 seniors to provide needed clothing and others items for the holidays.

Baltimore SmartCEO Announces Baltimore’s Top Company Cultures including MKS&H!
Baltimore SmartCEO is pleased to announce the 2015 Corporate Culture Awards winners. The Corporate Culture Awards celebrate companies in Greater Baltimore that have successfully championed a positive, productive and performance driven culture, and have worked with their employees to develop successful cultural practices.

We ran the Pink Ribbon 5k!
We were excited and proud to be a part of the Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund Pink Ribbon 5k in Frederick this year. Despite the rainy weather, we had a great time supporting this important iniative and look forward to next year.

Our accountants are attending AICPA’s Global Manufacturing Conference this September. The main focus is on Finance & Operations in the Manufacturing industry. It will cover diverse topics from measuring profitability and detecting fraud, to managing projects and increasing stakeholder buy-ins. The information garnered from this conference will assist our accountants in essential skills that make a direct impact on the bottom line of our clients and help shape the future of the manufacturing industry.
Tony Dulo (1951-2015) In memoriam
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our Senior Tax Accountant Tony Dulo. Tony passed away unexpectedly last Wednesday. Tony was a valued member of the MKS&H team since 1986; he had nearly 30 years with our firm. We are sad not only at the loss, but at the loss of an individual who provided remarkable service and friendship to his colleagues and to our clients. He will be deeply missed.
Donations can be made to the Maryland SPCA (in memory of Tony Dulo).

MKS&H supports Heartly House and Johns Hopkins Adopt a Family for the holiday season.
As this is truly the season for giving, MKS&H has chosen two deserving charities to focus our efforts on.
Our Frederick office will be providing support for The Heartly House, a shelter for victims impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.
Our Hunt Valley office will be helping the Johns Hopkins Adopt-A-Family program. This program benefits families that have been displaced from their homes as a result of domestic violence, unemployment, or other hardships.
We strive to promote the spirit of “giving” within the community this time of year and look forward to serving the families and individuals as part of these two important and influential programs.
MKS&H Raised $3,000 for Komen Race for the Cure
MKS&H had a strong showing for the 22nd Susan G. Komen Maryland Race for the Cure in Hunt Valley. Colleagues, family, and friends all participated. As a part of this important annual event, MKS&H raised $3,000 in support of our two co-workers and the organization as a whole.
